February 19 - 23
Time for another update. Not a big one, just don't want to fall behind and then this thing would become a monster.
83. Meltdown Imperial IPA - Sixpoint Brewing - Brooklyn, NY - 8% ABV
A hazy IPA in which the citrusy just bubbles to the top of the taste (if that can even make sense). It comes in a can although I had this on tap. Jumps right to the top of the hazy category for me. This was tough, because I did not know whether to categorize this as a double/triple IPA - which it is - or just a hazy, which it also is. Could go in either direction, and the fact that it is a double imperial probably is why I liked it so much for a hazy.
84. Hopslam Ale (Double IPA) - Bell's Brewing - Kalamazoo, MI - 10% ABV
I feel that Bell's is easily my absolutely favorite brewery that I have yet to visit, and this Hopslam does not disappoint. A good, bold, flavor, with some dry-hoppiness that isn't too bitter. Moves to the top of its category.
85. Hop Silo 5 - Tampa Bay Brewing (Hay IPA) - Tampa, FL - 6.77% ABV
This collaboration with Tripping Animals from Doral, Florida has a definite tangerine taste that comes through, and that makes it enjoyable. Strong enough that it is identifiable, rather than just "a hint of citrus", so I commend the brewers from that standpoint. It was a refreshing way to end my evening.
86. Florida Man Double IPA - Cigar City Brewing, Tampa, FL - 8.5% ABV
This was a very delicious Double IPA, of which I had never heard until this weekend. I was partly interested because I was at a house party with some friends and it was in the refrigerator, but I was also interested because of the name itself. And the can says it all (starting with "What better way below"). I don't normally like to just parrot what the brewery says about its beer, but in this case:
The world needs heroes, and in our home state of Florida only a very special hero will do. A hero with a shark tooth around his neck, a Grim Reaper tattoo on his arm, and a rap sheet longer than his mama’s mustache. A hero who’s forgotten m to announce ore about amateur taxidermy and alligator rasslin’ than you’ll ever know. What better way to pay tribute to our beloved Florida Man than with a big ol’ Double India Pale Ale brewed with a nearly-criminal amount of hops and a moderate bitterness that just about matches Florida Man’s general disposition. This hopped-up whopper of a beer is big in character and guaranteed to sear itself into your memory, just like “the world’s worst superhero,” Florida Man.
In all seriousness, this double IPA has a light taste that doesn't overly assault your taste buds with bitterness, and actually belies its 8.5% ABV. So as with all Florida Men, be very careful!
87. Hop Gun (IPA) - Funky Buddha Brewery - Oakland Park, FL - 7% ABV
Funky Buddha is one of my absolute favorite breweries to visit, and I cannot wait until I go there and add it to my ratings, especially with its thousands of taps (hyperbole, people). But, one of the original flavors is the Hop Gun, Funky's IPA. It is really good, and has a good amount of bitterness (50 IBUs) to announce its presence with authority (oh wait, wrong movie). Well, I just couldn't figure out how to put need for speed in here, especially when the obvious joke is the requested fly-by of the taste buds. As Funky Buddha has grown and spread out to all types of flavors, varieties and experiments (their Wake Up It's Morning is one of my 2 or 3 favorite beers on the planet), this old faithful is still consistently solid and very, very good.
88. Freedom Tower Amber - The Tank Brewery - Miami, FL - 5.3% ABV
This malty, caramel amber is named after the Freedom Tower in Miami, which is so named because of its deep roots to the Cuban-American population of Miami. Good enough for me. (Picture is of actual Freedom Tower - not the beer.)
